TO GO WITH AFP STORY BY AMER OUALI

(FILES) Picture taken on October 17, 1961 in Puteaux, outside Paris, shows demonstrators with their hands on their heads, arrested during a march gathering between 20,000 and 30,000 pro-Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) Algerians, and guarded by policemen outside a police station. French police, under orders from the head of the Parisian police, Maurice Papon, attacked the illegal but peaceful demonstration. After 37 years of denial, French government acknowledged 40 deaths in 1998, although there are estimates of over 200. Algerians thrown into the Seine, shot or killed – their skulls crushed with pick handles and rifle butts -, 5O years later, the silence of officials still hangs over the bloody repression of this demonstration.
